Dentists and Dermal Filler Procedures

By Cleah Sphan

Dermal fillers have now become part and parcel of cosmetic surgery across many parts of the world. However, guidance dictates that these procedures be performed by healthcare professionals that are trained in this procedure. Dermatologists and plastic surgeons were the only professionals who have traditionally been allowed to administer these treatments until recent changes. These days in certain parts of the United States, dentists are now licensed to administer dermal fillers to patients for a selected number of reasons.

Here we will examine what is involved for dentists who are licensed to treat patients using dermal fillers.

Here's a few details concerning dermal filler procedures.

A natural component in human skin is hyaluronic acid, and this is what dermal fillers are mainly comprised of. Hyaluronic acid is less present in our skin as the years go by, and this is a major cause of wrinkles and lines on our faces. Dermal fillers are extremely helpful in restoring normal skin appearance by getting rid of these lines and wrinkles. They are also helpful in plumping up the lips as well.

Dentists administering dermal fillers

The debate about dermal fillers being administered by dentists is ongoing at this time. Some say that dentists do not have the required training regarding facial anatomy, as they deal with the oral cavity mostly during their procedures. If you were to ask a dentist you would get a different answer, as during their training an intensive knowledge in the musculature of the face is needed as they relate to dentistry procedures.

Dentists in California have now been approved by their dental board for prescribing and administering dermal fillers. Dentists have welcomed this decision suggesting that it is well within the scope of dental practice to provide dermal fillers to patients. The board does have some limitations about which conditions a dentist can administer this treatment for, and therapeutic reasons is the exception where permission is granted. Before being certified, the essential training in the process must be undertaken.

States have their own rules on the subject. Dentists in Georgia are allowed to inject dermal fillers after a 21 hour training course, as dictated by the Georgia Dental Association, and only for dental reasons.

Limitations involved

After performing an extensive review of the dental boards in most other states in the United States, it appears that many states now allow dentists to perform dermal filler procedures as long as it is related to or required for a dental therapeutic purpose. The injection of dermal fillers for cosmetic reasons or for non-dental related problems is considered unprofessional conduct and may even be illegal. Dentists are obligated to look at the rules in their own state and the board governing it, to find out if they are eligible to get the necessary training needed to deliver these treatments.

Synopsis

As time goes on, the art if dentistry advances greatly, and cosmetic procedures do the same. The injection of dermal fillers is permitted nowadays for issues that are involved directly in dentistry, but for cosmetic reasons, dentists are extremely limited in what they are allowed to do. Dental boards may in fact allow dentists in time to treat patients using dermal filler injections for cosmetic reasons, but dentists must refer to the stipulations set up by the boards in their state of origin at this time for guidance on this.
