Weight Loss Challenges After Pregnancy

By Trishia Serinton

Weight gain during pregnancy is a natural phenomenon. 'Baby weight' refers to the weight that has gained not only by the growing fetus and the enlarging womb but also the deposition of fat around the abdomen. It can be quite difficult for most women to shed this extra weight after they have had the baby. If the mother had some extra weight before pregnancy, it can actually make the process even tougher.

Below, we will be discussing some of the basic ways to get rid of unwanted weight after a mother has delivered her baby.

1. Keep hydrated

Following your pregnancy, it is essential to keep hydrated and prevent dehydration. The extra liquid that you consume will also contribute to a fuller feeling in the stomach, which also helps some to avoid eating too much food. Don't over-do it though, drink only what your body craves.

2. Do not have overly strict diets

It seems counter-intuitive, but breast milk needs to be replenished from the food you eat, and when it is not sufficient, the nutrients to the baby may not be rich enough. While this is not strictly proven, it must also be borne in mind that eating a healthy, nourishing diet is sufficient to allow for slow and natural weight loss rather than a rapid drop in weight. Consuming healthy foods such as plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables are excellent at keeping hunger at bay and making sure the weight comes off gradually.

3. Be sure to exercise regularly

Exercise remains one of the best ways to lose weight. Excess calories can be burned in many ways, including cardiovascular exercises like aerobics which will maintain muscles and bone density. There's lots of great exercises to choose from, including cross-training, swimming, brisk walking, and jogging. Exercise also helps keep the mood elevated due to the endorphins that are released. Stress that is naturally a part of raising a newborn will be reduced because of this. Prior to beginning any exercise regimen, it's very important to consult a physician.

4. Keep breastfeeding your baby

Essential fats and nutrients are provided to the baby from breastfeeding, these give the baby the right amount of nutrition and helps to enhance the immune system. At this time, the full effects that breastfeeding has on weight loss can not be truly determined. Even if it doesn't, it is no reason to stop breastfeeding an infant.

5. Get plenty of rest

Going through pregnancy can be taxing on the body, and looking after an infant can raise stress levels even further. When a new mother is able to get 7 hours or more of sleep every night, research has shown that this contributes to helping lose weight from the pregnancy.

Synopsis

A new mother can use these simple techniques to effectively lose the weight that the pregnancy has caused for them.
