The Procedures In Gastric Banding And Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgeries

By Raymond Meyer

The bariatric type of a surgical operation is being performed to obese people. The two methods for bariatric surgeries are sleeve gastrectomy and the adjustable gastric banding. Based on some research, the two procedures can cause not only a long term loss of weight but also recovering diabetes, improving the cardiovascular risk factors, and reducing the mortality.

These procedures are only recommended to obese people who have at least 40 of their BMI or body mass index. These are also recommended for people with 35 of BMI and those who have some serious medical conditions like diabetes. So this means that any person who has a BMI of 30 or more may possibly undergo gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy surgeries.

An adjustable gastric banding may sometimes be referred to as lap banding. In this method, a device made of silicone is positioned around the top portion of the stomach for treating obesity. And its main purpose is slowing food consumption, thus, will result to the reduction of the amount of food consumption.

People may sustain and achieve weight loss. Sustaining and achieving it can be done through the reduction of appetite, proper selection of food healthy options, limitation of the food intake, and lastly is the progression of food when being digested from top to the bottom parts. However, methods like this may be done only for people doing the proper exercise and proper diet before having the operation.

According to a research, this surgery type is not an easy option for those people that suffer from obesity. And the reason for this is due to the drastic steps being performed and the involvement of severe risks and pain like some other surgical operation types. However, the procedure is less invasive and patients can remain in the hospital for just a few days after the surgery. Some other advantages include faster recovery, have smaller scars, and lesser pain unlike other methods.

One last advantage is it does not involve staples and removing some parts of the stomach and also, the intestines are not moved. And since the materials used are biocompatible, it can remain in the body without casing any harm. However, not all obese patients are candidates to this. Those who are extremely obese and who already have undergone abdominal surgeries may be required to have open approach.

Another surgical method is sleeve gastrectomy where loss of weight is done by the removal of huge stomach parts along in the curvature. The result for this is reducing the normal stomach size by fifteen percent. And also, it results to a tube like or sleeve like structure.

This type of procedure for loss of weight is a very common option in New York. In this procedure, there is a longitudinal removal of stomach parts in the antrum for about 5 to 6 centimeters to the fundus which is close to the cardia. The ideal size of the remaining stomach is approximately 150 milliliters.

The surgery are also applied to children and adolescents. Based on some studies, there is a large loss amount of weight in ages five to twenty one years. Complications may occur after conducting the surgery which include sleeve leaking, vomiting, esophageal pain, blood clots, blood infections, etc.
